Peer reviewed research has shown that there is an increased risk for bladder and rectal cancers from drinking chlorinated water. It is a given that you wouldn`t knowingly expose yourself to toxins every day, or want to do harm to your lungs and other internal organs, make your allergies and skin conditions worse, or willingly increase your risk of getting disease. Yet the simple truth is chlorine and the by-products it produces in your shower water are toxic and can absolutely be a detriment to your health. The toxins found in your shower water include: Chloroform: is a powerful by-product of the chlorination process which causes excessive production of free-radicals (that damage living tissue). It causes normal cells to mutate and the cholesterol in your circulatory system to oxidize. This chemical is a known cancer-causing agent! Chlorine: is added to most municipal water supplies. It is a disinfectant that can harden your arteries; destroy proteins in the body, irritate the skin and exacerbate sinus conditions. It will definitely aggravate asthma and other respiratory problems. MX (a chlorinated acid): is also a by-product of chlorination. MX is known to cause genetic mutations to occur which can eventually lead to cancer growth. It has been found in all chlorinated water in which it has been tested for. DCA (Dichloroacetic acid): also alters cholesterol metabolism, and has been shown to cause liver cancer in lab animals. How can so much chlorine get into your system? Well, when you take a warm shower the pores on your skin open, causing it to act just like a sponge. As the water in the shower creates steam, it produces chlorine vapors which you end up breathing in. The chlorine that is absorbed through the skin goes directly into your bloodstream at a rate that`s up to six times higher than drinking water that contains it. What are the short-term risks for chlorine exposure? skin, eye or sinus irritation in those who are sensitive to it asthma (inflammation leading to oxygen deprivation) sinus conditions (inflammation) allergies (all kinds) skin rashes difficulty breathing (emphysemic aggravation) The good news is that the risk of showering in chlorine-treated water can be reduced immediately by the use of a proper shower filter.
